Explore the timeless craftsmanship behind Khus Attar through four traditional steps, carefully followed to preserve its distinctive earthy and refreshing aroma.

  • Harvesting Khus Roots
    Step 01

    Harvesting Khus Roots

Mature Khus (vetiver) roots are carefully harvested, thoroughly washed to remove soil and impurities, and cut into smaller sections to help release their natural aromatic compounds.

  • Loading the Copper Deg
    Step 02

    Loading the Copper Deg

The prepared Khus roots are placed into a traditional copper Deg along with water. The vessel is securely sealed and prepared for the distillation process.

  • Traditional Distillation & Fragrance Capture

The Deg is gently heated, allowing fragrant vapours to rise and travel through the connecting pipe into the Bhapka, where they condense. The aromatic distillate is traditionally collected in sandalwood oil, which absorbs and preserves the rich Khus fragrance.

  • Maturation & Finishing

    Maturation & Finishing

The attar is carefully aged and allowed to settle, giving the fragrance time to harmonize and develop its smooth, deep, earthy, and long-lasting character. It is then carefully filtered and prepared for bottling.

The Enchanting Legend Behind Khus Attar

The legacy of Khus attar is profoundly intertwined with India’s ancient practices of employing fragrant plants for personal scent, cooling, rituals, and traditional wellness. Khus, sourced from the roots of vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides), has been esteemed in the Indian subcontinent for its characteristic earthy fragrance and naturally cooling attributes.

Ancient Indian customs highlight the use of aromatic plants and roots in the creation of perfumes, scented waters, pastes, and various other formulations. The roots of Khus were especially valued for their refreshing fragrance and were commonly employed to perfume living environments, particularly during the warmer months.

Throughout the centuries, artisans have honed techniques for extracting the essence of Khus roots, which ultimately contributed to the attar-making traditions that made Kannauj renowned. Its prominence in traditional Indian perfumery surged during the Mughal period, when natural attars were highly esteemed by royalty and the upper classes.

Historically, Khus was also employed to create cooling screens, mats, and aromatic products to alleviate the heat of Indian summers. As time has passed, its fragrance has become an integral part of traditional attar culture, and today, Khus attar remains a sought-after natural perfume, valued for its refreshing and grounding essence.
